Pakistanis and gharelu totkay go hand in hand. There is a ‘totka’ for literally everything. It’s crazy! While looking up a few home remedies myself, I came across the most INSANE home remedies for fair skin so I thought, why not share these wonderful secrets with the world.

These were just some fun tips and tricks in case you are bored. Before you embark upon on of them read the warning note below and remember, you are beautiful just the way you are.

Here are 11 insane home remedies that will make you ‘gora-gora’:

1. Tumeric

An ingredient that is more often than not used in scrumptious Pakistani cuisine. So, yes, something that’s used in a biryani and different salans can make you look fair.
Take a teaspoon of turmeric and 3 teaspoons of lime juice and apply on your skin for 15 minutes. You can also use raw turmeric, peel and make a paste and apply for 10 minutes.

2. Malai aka fresh cream

Malai! Yes, the thick creamy layer you get when you boil milk that you get from your local doodh walas has skin whitening properties. Something so delightfully tasty also has another purpose!

3. Gram Flour

Gram Flour is used in making curry and pakoras! Don’t you just love them especially in the rain? Well, if you mix gram flour with rose water and apply that mixture to your face, let it dry, wash your face and you’ll see the difference!

4. Sandal

One teaspoon sandal powder, 1 teaspoon gram flour, a little almond powder, a few lemon drops, a pinch of turmeric and a dash of rose water and voila, you have a paste that will help remove darkness and blemishes. No, this isn’t the recipe for a curry because who adds rose water to a curry? This is one of the totka that’ll help you lighten your skin tone.

5. Kacha Doodh aka unboiled milk

Kacha doodh is milk that hasn’t been treated or even boiled. When the milk isn’t boiled it becomes a lean-mean-making-you-instantly-gora-machine.

6. Orange Peels

When you peel an orange and throw those peels away, you wasted a perfectly good skin whitening remedy. Take dry orange peels and make a powder out of them. Boil this powder in orange to make an instant natural scrub. To be honest, this is my personal favourite.

7. Almonds

Did you ever hear your elders talk about eating almonds in morning because it (somehow) makes you sharper? Well, now you’ll be smart and gora. Here’s how: soak some almonds in milk overnight and blend in to a paste and voila, whitening cream ready for application.

8. Eggs

Do you fancy an omelette? Or any dish that involves eggs? Of all the recipes you know that involves egg as an ingredient, here’s one more but this isn’t edible, it’s to make you gora!
One chicken egg, a few tablespoons of milk and one tablespoon honey. Mix it all together and then apply on face for 30 mins.

9. Barley Flour

Ever heard of barley flour? I mean ‘jau ka ata’? Not only is it healthier than wheat flour it also has whitening properties. So when you aren’t making rotis out of them you can use some of it with rose water and apply on exposed skin.

10. Coconut

Fun fact about coconuts: They were used as gas masks in World War I. And, coconut oil and coconut milk also has skin whitening agents. Also, most women even drink coconut water during their pregnancy so they have gora kids.

11. Lemon

Last but not the least, this is not for you to apply on your skin! This you have to drink on an empty stomach in the morning, locally known as ‘nihaar munh’. Take a glass of lukewarm water and add 1 lemon’s juice and down it.
